Marvel is getting ready for their second major cycle of films, the sequel installment.

With Iron Man 3, and Captain America: Winter Soldier first on the dockett, there is still time for Thor: The Dark World, but pieces need to gathered.

Word is Christopher Eccleston (G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra) may be suiting up as the man to challenge Chris Hemsworth’s Thor.

Hit the jump for details on who he will possibly be playing.

According to sources Eccleston is in final talks with the studio to assume the role of Malekith, a member of the race of dark elves, who is very smart and has enormous strength, speed, stamina, durability, agility and reflexes.

Along with Eccleston, Tom Hiddleston is returning as Loki. From the new title Thor: The Dark World we can gather that the film will center around Thor facing Dark Elves, Malekith just so happens to be the ruler and leader of said Elves.

As a dark elf, Malekith also has the ability to manipulate the forces of magic for a variety of effects, including teleportation, energy projection, physical malleability, flight (by transforming into mist) illusion casting, and the ability to change the shape and appearance of other beings or objects.

Malekith has a vulnerability to iron, which disrupts or cancels his magical spells.

Some fans are suggesting Marvel will go the comic book route where Loki teams up with Malekith to track down the Casket of Ancient Winters.  This would certainly make sense.

Thor: The Dark World is set to hit theaters on November 8th, 2013.
