Todd Phillips, known for his work on The Hangover series, is putting the laughs on hold to direct the 1974 remake of The Gambler.
The original film starred a young James Caan as chronic gambler getting in deep with the wrong people, based on the great short story by Fyodor Dostoyevsky.
Martin Scorsese was originally attached to redo the film with the possibility of Leonardo DiCaprio in the lead role, but Scorsese has now left the project.
Scorsese’s The Departed writer William Monahan wrote the screenplay, and said he planned on going back to Dostoyevsky’s source material for the new film.
According to The Hollywood Reporter Phillips is set to shoot The Gambler directly after he finishes The Hangover Part III.
