Shocker!

Shailene Woodley’s Mary Jane Watson has been cut From The Amazing Spider-Man 2 and will instead be featured in the third film.

Earlier this week Sony announced that The Amazing Spider-Man 3 will be released on June 10th, 2016 and The Amazing Spider-Man 4 will arrive on May 4th, 2018.

Early images from set showed Woodley in scenes with Andrew Garfield and co. but now according to her interview with Entertainment Weekly, she’s getting the axe.

More after the jump.

*** UPDATE – After some digging, it’s been confirmed that Shailene Woodley has been cut completely from the franchise. The role of Mary Jane Watson will be recast.

“Of course I’m bummed,” said the actress. ”But I’m a firm believer in everything happening for a specific reason….based on the proposed plot, I completely understand holding off on introducing (Mary Jane) until the next film.”

The second film is set to hit theaters next summer on May 2nd, 2014.

We will see new additions like Jamie Foxx as Electro and Dane DeHaanas Harry Osborn in the mix. Emma Stone returns as Gwen and I’m sure more madness will ensue. It’s a shame that we won’t see Woodley but it may be for the best.

In fact now that you really think about it, Woodley is currently shooting Divergent which will have at least three films attached. So we may never see Woodley as Mary Jane Watson because she’ll be busy filming the sequels.

Now the question starts up again…who should/could play Mary Jane Watson if the role is recast?

*** UPDATE – After some digging, it’s been confirmed that Shailene Woodley has been cut completely from the franchise. The role of Mary Jane Watson will be recast.

In The Amazing Spider-Man 2,  opening May 2, 2014, for Peter Parker (Garfield), life is busy – between taking out the bad guys as Spider-Man and spending time with the person he loves, Gwen (Emma Stone), high school graduation can’t come quickly enough. Peter hasn’t forgotten about the promise he made to Gwen’s father to protect her by staying away – but that’s a promise he just can’t keep. Things will change for Peter when a new villain, Electro (Jamie Foxx), emerges, an old friend, Harry Osborn (Dane DeHaan), returns, and Peter uncovers new clues about his past.
